Stella Artois
Stella Artois is probably Belgium's, if not the world's most famous beer, brewed in Leuven since 1926 and sold worldwide. Claimed to be rooted in Den Hoorn brewery which was originally founded in 1366, the presence of a brewery in Den Hoorn is confirmed by the record of excise duties.
Sébastien Artois, the brand's namesake, first began as an apprentice brewmaster at Den Hoorn brewery and in 1708 became a master brewer of the Brewer's Guild of Leuven, and 9 years later, in 1717, purchased Den Hoorn brewery. Artois then changed the name of the brewery to Brouwerij Artois but retained the hunting horn in the logo, which is claimed to be the oldest logo still in use today.
The brewery remained in the family and continued to expand until 1814, when the last Artois descendant died without an heir and it was passed to his sister, losing the Artois family name. In 1987 Brouwerij Artois merged with Piedboeuf brewery to form Interbrew, which then merged with Brazilian brewer AmBev, which then merged with Anheuser-Busch to officially form Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev), who owns the brand today.
Stella Artois was launched by Brewery Artois in 1926 as a special edition Christmas beer, with the name stella being Latin for star. From there it became their most popular product and eventually the company namesake.
