Ghent (Gent in Dutch and Gand in French) is beautiful and relaxed university city in the heart of Flanders and rich with history. Growing up in the safety of Gravensteen castle, through success in manufacturing cloth the city grew to be one of the largest in northern Europe and virtually independent until 16th century . Ghent has a well-preserved medieval city center with historic architecture, including churches, guildhalls, and other structures.
Somewhat lesser known tourists Ghent is the city for micro-breweries. The city lays claim to hundreds of bars, beer shops and tasting venues.
